چکیده

Much progress has been made in the power and energy scaling of mid-infrared lasers based on transition metal ions, such as Cr2 + , Co2 Fe2 zinc cadmium chalcogenides. Still, exploration physics these devices is incomplete. In this work, we analyze absorption spectra collected from ions several binary, ternary, quaternary host crystals at temperatures a few degrees Kelvin to room temperature. We use zero-phonon lines low-temperature calculate value crystal field hosts. plot energies with respect anion–cation distance show that their strengths deviate somewhat trend predicted by theory. model which previously developed describe upper state lifetime predict steady-state radiative efficiency Fe:II–VI materials The impact relative crystalline disorder output characteristics Cr:ZnS, Cr:ZnSe, Fe:ZnSe, Fe:CdMnTe explored. effect decreased long-range order observed broadening -doped ternary alloys, spectral linewidth continuous-wave lasers, reduction portion Cr:ZnSe emission spectrum accessible for modelocked lasing. Crystal structures of dense lithium: a metal-semiconductor-metal transition.

Ab initio random structure searching and single-crystal x-ray diffraction have been used to determine the full structures of three phases of lithium, recently discovered at low temperature above 60 GPa. A structure with C2mb symmetry, calculated to be a poor metal, is proposed for the oC88 phase (60-65 GPa). The oC40 phase (65-95 GPa) is found to have a lowest-enthalpy structure with C2cb symme...

Crystal engineering of coordination polymers using 4,4'-bipyridine as a bond between transition metal atoms.

Coordination polymers have attracted an enormous interest among chemists due to their novel physical and chemical properties. This review describes the role of 4,4'-bipyridine in discovering various coordination polymers with novel topologies that range from one-dimensional to three dimensional. The geometries of coordination polymers of bipy include linear, zigzag, four-fold helices, molecular...

Phase engineering of transition metal dichalcogenides.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent a family of materials with versatile electronic, optical, and chemical properties. Most TMD bulk crystals are van der Waals solids with strong bonding within the plane but weak interlayer bonding. The individual layers can be readily isolated. Single layer TMDs possess intriguing properties that are ideal for both fundamental and technologically...

Engineering skyrmions in transition-metal multilayers for spintronics

Magnetic skyrmions are localized, topologically protected spin structures that have been proposed for storing or processing information due to their intriguing dynamical and transport properties. Important in terms of applications is the recent discovery of interface stabilized skyrmions as evidenced in ultra-thin transition-metal films. However, so far only skyrmions at interfaces with a singl...

Photonic crystal disk lasers.

A novel type of nanolasers, which combines the advantages of photonic crystal lasers and microdisk lasers, has been demonstrated based on InAlGaAs/InGaAs quantum wells using pulsed optical pumping at room temperature. It incorporates the properties of small footprint, small mode volume, and submilliwatt threshold, and favors vertical emission. We believe that this type of laser acts as a promis...
